Challenge:

Developed web games that work on PC and mobile devices. Teaching kids subjects such as Math and English through gameplay.

Also working with a client, relaying information each week making sure the client agreed with the progress and focus of our work.

Task Breakdown:

Working With A Client

Worked with Greg Nussbaum, alongside an artist/designer Lauren Bartley. We followed Greg's design documents for both games, and offered our own input on things such as game loops and UI.

My Role

Lauren provided the art and I programmed and implemented everything into Construct 2. Although the engine uses a visual scripting tool, it was good practice for my process in creating game systems.

Generation Systems

For Multiplication Zombies I created a system that generated the numbers for the lanterns. The numbers were generated randomly with a probability that one of them would be the correct answer.

For Terminator Turkeys I created a system that picked a word out of a list. The list is a text file that uses XML, allowing Greg or anyone with the project folder the ability to add new words at any time. The word is taken from the XML file and imported into Construct 2 using a built in AJAX tool. With the word, a random vowel is taken out resulting in the word problem provided on screen.

Outcome:

The month of October 2017, Greg emailed us with great news:

" ... Multiplication Zombies game is one of my top performing games for October. It's frequently in my top ten active games. Today, I saw it as number one. Here, you can see that there were 64 connections to it at one time. It gets about 4,000 page views per day for the last two weeks."

Multiplication Zombies and Terminator Turkeys are published on Mr. Nussbaum Games website.

Greg also let us know a teacher posted on Twitter showing students playing Multiplication Zombies on tablets in class.
